After my husband’s passing, I struggled to learn how to deal with new responsibilities such as maintaining a yard and home and managing finances—from balancing the checkbook to understanding investments and retirement funds. Every day brought new challenges.
At the same time, fear and discouragement were constant companions, along with a deep sense of loss and separation from my companion of 50 years. I began to feel burdened with the responsibilities and costs, and felt I no longer needed the spacious dream home we had shared during our retirement years in Florida.
When an opportunity came to move to another part of the country to be near family, I prayed earnestly about this goal and gained conviction each day that God was directing me each step of the way. Especially helpful was this statement from page 123 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of material sense with spiritual ideas.”
