I was introduced to Christian Science several years ago. At that time, I was afflicted by what the doctors called “gout,” which they said had caused serious pain in my feet and an inflammation that didn’t allow me to walk. I’d used drugs that relieved the pain for one to two months, and I would limp with a lot of pain, until, little by little, the pain would diminish.
The last two times I had these spells, the problem affected both feet, but by then I was no longer just a supporter of Christian Science, but a student. So I asked a Christian Science practitioner to help me through prayer.
The practitioner gave me this citation from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy to read and study: “The illusion of material sense, not divine law, has bound you, entangled your free limbs, crippled your capacities, enfeebled your body, and defaced the tablet of your being” (p. 227). This made me realize that disease was like a dream from which I could wake up because material sense cannot govern spiritual man, the reflection of God.
