"IMMUTABLE LAW"

From the October 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ON page 134 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy speaks of Christian Science as "the natural law of harmony which overcomes discord," and she states that it is "not because this Science is supernatural or preternatural, nor because it is an infraction of divine law, but because it is the immutable law of God, good." Christian Science, whenever it is scientifically applied, as the unchanging law of God, destroys all false beliefs and erroneous claims; and scientific application is nothing less than practical application of spiritual truth.

Like all law, Christian Science must be applied in order to become operative in human experience. Through its application the infinite divine power is invoked to bring order out of seeming chaos, to establish harmony in place of apparent discord; for harmony and order, which are the conditions prevailing eternally in the universe of reality, that is, in the realm of Mind, may be made manifest here and now in proportion to our understanding and application of divine Science, of God's "immutable law."

The Apostle Paul well knew the claim and character of the so-called carnal or mortal mind. He declared it to be "enmity against God," for, said he, "it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." Paul saw this pseudo-mind with its beliefs and activities, this counterfeit of divine Mind, to be so utterly devoid of reality and of every vestige of truth that he could not conceive that in any particular it could conform to divine reality; hence it was not subject to divine law. But Mrs. Eddy saw that Christian Science, as God's "immutable law," is the complete master of mortal mind in all its myriads of kaleidoscopic changes, in all its multifarious claims to reality and power. It is the only law by which God governs His universe of spiritual ideas; it is never infringed; it is never broken; it is never annulled or repealed; and it is never superseded. It is the eternal expression of God's unchanging will: it is His method of governing the universe, and is always operative.
