THE POWER OF HUMILITY

From the October 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There is little desire in the human consciousness for humility until, through spiritual unfoldment in Christian Science, its mighty potency is perceived.

Long and patiently meekness often waits outside the mental door before it is given an opportunity to enter, for the individual may be entertaining arrogance, presumption, disdain, self-will, self-love, self-sufficiency, looking to these to aid him in an attempt to build up power and prestige. Thus, he is like one erecting a frail structure on the sand. He has not the material for right construction. Since he lacks a right basis, and indeed every essential for his work, the results of his efforts are vain and cannot last.

There is need for the right understanding of what constitutes dominion and power, for it is the heritage of man. Jesus said, "It is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom," but only the lowly in heart may claim it. Meekness, waiting to instruct, holds the secret of true attainment, but its voice is lowtoned and is heard only by the listening, receptive thought. The way of humility always leads to the right sense of power, for power is the outcome of but one activity—the working in and through us of the righteousness of God, good.
