PRAYER FOR A CHILD

From the May 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Take him lightly by the hand,
Raise him up that he may stand
Firmly, free and unafraid.

In the great uncharted sphere
Newly opened to his eyes
Let Thy goodness now appear,
Infinite, divinely wise.
Mold and fashion his career
In a manner all Thine own;
Let no unavailing tear
Shed its sorrow on his throne.
If the worldly weight would press,
May he find the burden light,
In Thy justice seek redress,
Make Thy joy his chief delight.
From a bleak and shoreless sea
May he rescue those who roam,
Heal their sin and frailty,
Reinstate each broken home.
Then when dark chaotic sense
Yields to Truth's triumphant power,
May the Spirit's recompense
Be his treasure every hour.
