"THE NAME OF CHRIST"

From the June 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is undoubtedly the sincere desire of all those who have acknowledged the name of Christ in its healing, saving sense to gain heights of greater understanding and quicker demonstration in the sacred ministry of Truth. What is this name of Christ, or Messiah, which has held so supreme a place in the hearts and lives of Godlike men? What is it but the manifestation of divine reality?

It has been believed that the Christ came with the appearing of Jesus and left with his disappearing, but Christian Science has brought to light the true meaning of Christ, defined by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 583) as "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error." The impersonal Christ never came and never left, but has always existed, and is always present. It has been made plain to a waiting world wherever and whenever there has appeared a consciousness pure enough to receive it and to reveal it to mankind.

Jesus, the son of the Virgin Mary, manifested the Christ better than has any other human being. It was the Christ, exemplified by our Master, which enabled him instantaneously to heal the sick and the sinning; and it was the Christ which the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, exalted and magnified in her own individual experience, as she obediently followed Truth.
