"THE CHART OF LIFE"

From the January 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 24), "Acquaintance with the original texts, and willingness to give up human beliefs (established by hierarchies, and instigated sometimes by the worst passions of men), open the way for Christian Science to be understood, and make the Bible the chart of life, where the buoys and healing currents of Truth are pointed out."

"The Bible the chart of life"! In these days of distress and tribulation, when multitudes have been forced to migrate to unknown places, where borders are constantly being shifted and maps changed, what a comfort it is to have such a "chart of life," unchanged for centuries, and unchangeable for all time to come! A chart can be very puzzling to the uninstructed, and may be laid aside by them as useless. But, to the one who has learned how to understand and utilize it, a chart becomes a safe and trustworthy guide. Just so is it with the Bible. It may at first seem puzzling and even contradictory, but when understood it becomes a safe guide in every walk of life.

While traveling through the different countries one may hear various remarks concerning the Bible. Someone may say, "I only read my favorite bits;" another, "I simply cannot understand the Bible, but I love the Psalms;" again, someone else declares, "The Old Testament is curious, and I am not very fond of it; but I enjoy reading the New Testament."
