THE DOOR

From the January 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock."—Revelation 3:20.

Dost thou hear Truth gently knocking,
Knocking at thy heart's closed door?
What prevents thy hearing, brother?
Truth has knocked there oft before.

Is it mad ambition swaying,
Urging thee to place and power?
Is it hatred of thy brother?
Is it unforgiveness' hour?

Is it greed of gold or jewels?
Is it pride, or envy's fires?
Cast them out, O brother, quickly;
These are not thy real desires.

These alone have dulled thy hearing;
Cast them out forevermore.
Truth is knocking, ever knocking;
Only thou canst open the door.

Open wide thy door, O brother,
Lo! the Christ, Truth, entereth,
Bringing sweet surcease from sorrow,
From disease and sin and death.
