FINISH THE COURSE UNSWERVINGLY

From the March 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How easy it is to abandon an enterprise unfinished! Undauntable resolution, and every man has it as a divine gift, is requisite to carry an important project, or any project at all, to conclusion. How often is one enticed through ennui, unrest, discouragement, downright laziness, or the attractiveness of some other venture, to hesitate in his course or leave off the work in which he is engaged; whereas steadfastness of purpose ensures the glorious satisfaction of staying with the task to the finish and bringing into visibility some measure of godliness.

Many a person incurs the risk of failure by turning from one job to another, seldom bringing any particular one to completion. He loses interest in what he is doing. He yields to the temptation to start something else. No one, it is safe to say, is immune to the subtle suggestion to quit or change his course, whether he is planting a field, writing an article, grooming the person, overcoming temperament, treating the sick, practicing law or engineering, carrying on a campaign, political or military. But happily no one who lends himself to the urge of vital Principle in the way taught by Christian Science, lacks the ability to silence the distracting suggestion and to continue the even tenor of his way to laudable achievement.

The tendency to shift or let down has been known to defer full recovery of the sick. The patient accepts Christian Science treatment until partly relieved, perhaps, then prematurely dispenses with the services of a practitioner, saying, "This problem is for me to work out." Other motives or arguments may cause him to waver. Every seasoned Scientist is familiar with such situations. A vacillating course will not do. Change of practitioners is permissible, of course, and not infrequently advisable.
