MIND-HEALING

From the March 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy has often used the term "Christian Science Mind-healing" to designate the system which she discovered and founded. This term implies that the Principle of Christian Science, the basis of its healing, is Mind—the divine Mind, the one infinite Spirit called God. Principle being Mind, treatment in Christian Science is mental treatment and the healing is mental healing. But since Mind is God, and not the so-called human mind or brain, its power is divine, its law is absolute, and its effects are restorative and regenerative.

Sooner or later every honest inquirer into the healing of Christian Science comes face to face with this question: How can mental treatment, which deals with a person's thinking or belief, produce physical results? The same question may present itself more specifically: How can one be healed of an organic disease or a structural defect simply by a change in thought?

This is a legitimate question, and students of Christian Science will find the answer through their study of Mrs. Eddy's writings. For the present discussion, however, it will be useful to point out that this question as to how spiritual thinking reaches and heals the body can be resolved into a number of other questions such as: Is man a material or a spiritual being? Could spiritual man have a material body? What is the true nature of body? What is it that needs to be healed?
