SOVEREIGN POWER

From the March 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

David recognized in large measure the true nature of sovereignty when, at the height of his earthly career as king, he blessed the Lord before all the congregation and said: "Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all" (I Chron. 29:11, 12). Recognizing God as the Supreme Ruler, and humbly submitting to divine law, in so far as he understood it, David and his kingdom prospered.

Those who are desiring wealth and prestige for themselves and their nation will do well to recognize that they must first acquire that understanding of man's relation to God which brought prosperity and dominion both to David and to his son Solomon.

Happily, the tools for acquiring that understanding are today readily at hand in all Christian Science Reading Rooms and in any good library. Here will be found the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, whose textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," unlocks the door to the spiritual meaning of the Bible. To her it was revealed that God is infinite Mind, and not a manlike personality. Mind is one of the seven synonyms for God used throughout her writings, and the term conveys the infinite wisdom and all-pervading power of the creator, unlimited by human concepts of time and space. On page 143 of Science and Health our Leader writes: "Mind is the grand creator, and there can be no power except that which is derived from Mind. If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name."
