After my home had been completely broken up and the last enemy seemed to be claiming each member of the family in rapid succession, I became quite confused and did not know where to turn for help. At this time I was holding a position in the United States Government in Washington, D. C, but my health was so impaired that it seemed impossible to continue with this work. It was at this point that a friend presented me with a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and asked that I promise to read at least one page each day.
I did not understand very much at first, but continued to read, and quickly and clearly the truth unfolded. It was like walking from darkness into light. I read every available moment, and in two months I gained thirty pounds in weight, received a promotion in business, and my whole outlook on life changed. A physical healing, as well as one of loneliness and a sense of living in the past, took place.
One day I was sent home from my office by the nurse in charge with a high temperature and symptoms of pneumonia. She advised that I go immediately to a hospital. and when I told her I preferred to have Christian Science treatment, she stated that I was very ill and that this was no time to fool around with Christian Science. I was quite a young student, but not in the least fearful, and I took my stand, knowing that Science would heal me. I went to my room and telephoned a friend, who came by that evening for a few minutes. This friend read from the Bible and our textbook, and in about twenty minutes the fever was gone and I arose completely healed, proving the statement in Science and Health (p. 495), "Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony." The experience gave me a greater sense of humility and gratitude, and I felt a closeness to God.
