OUR SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE

From the December 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

KNOWING the birthright which is forever ours as God's reflection, Paul writes (Rom. 8:16,17), "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ." Of joyous portent are these apostolic words informing us of the fact that we are heirs of God. That is the spiritual import of all Scriptural truth, which Christian Science explains and enables us to prove. In this Science we discover our spiritual selfhood to be the forever reflection of the immortal nature of God.

On page 520 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes: "Unfathomable Mind is expressed. The depth, breadth, height, might, majesty, and glory of infinite Love fill all space. That is enough!" Christian Scientists are constantly finding their thought enriched and their experience enlarged and deepened as they recognize these grand verities. Their heritage they assess not in terms of material wealth, but in the possession of that absolute faith in, spiritual understanding of, and conscious unity with infinite Love. Needless to say, to possess this sublime heritage they must disown the shallowness and penury of material thinking.

Heirs of God are amenable to Spirit, Mind, alone. Ideas of Soul are never the children of men. They are never limited in their outlook, narrow in their attitudes, impoverished in their understanding. Human frailties, physical conditions, mortal misconceptions, do not belong to God's children. Theirs are the breadth of boundless Love itself, the wideness of Mind's all-inclusive comprehension, the magnitude of Life's being. The study of Christian Science enables us to recognize these spiritual facts as true of our real selfhood.
