"THE LIFE-PRESERVING POWER OF SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING"

From the May 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

After hearing reports of sickness in the neighborhood where she lives, a student of Christian Science recognized the unreality and powerlessness of the errors, then asked herself by way of reassurance, "How can the Christian Scientist feel sure that he is protected from prevalent false beliefs?" Instantly there came to her thought the words "the life-preserving power of spiritual understanding.'"

The student then saw clearly that spiritual understanding, derived from the careful, systematic study of Christian Science, acts as a life preserver by making one able to protect himself from error of every sort and to live harmoniously. She found that the phrase which had come to her as an angel thought and had been so helpful is contained in the definition of "Abraham" in the Glossary of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. In its entirety the definition is as follows (p. 579):

"Abraham. Fidelity; faith in the divine Life and in the eternal Principle of being.
