It has been said that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." Over six years ago when I was suffering from abdominal, back, and leg trouble I was at a point of extremity. I had severe pains and found it difficult to walk or to lie down. When the physician told me he could do no more for me, I consulted a chiropractor; but he could not help me either. After that I went to three specialists, and all three failed to find the source of the trouble. However, the third one found that one of my legs was shorter than the other. He recommended that I wear a higher heel on the shoe which I was wearing on the foot of the shorter leg. I did this, but the pain continued.
It was while I was consulting this last specialist that the thought came to me to go up into the attic to dig out my college books on anatomy. I thought I might be able to discover for myself the cause of the trouble. While I was looking for the anatomy books, my hand came upon a book with an apparently new wrapper on it. I pulled it out and found that it was a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy which my parents-in-law had bought for my children about twenty years before.
I had read part of the Christian Science textbook after my marriage, but I had done so with a prejudiced mind, and I understood little of what I was reading. Now I asked myself, "Why not take this book down into the living room with the anatomy books and look into it once more?"
