An Essential Modesty

From the February 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Although Christian Scientists know that the Science they follow is the revealed Truth, they certainly do not assume any superiority to others or presume that they are privileged above others. They are so engaged with the idea of helping mankind to understand Truth that they do not indulge in comparisons. Gratitude is the keynote of their present position, and they have a keen sense of responsibility in demonstrating the nature of divine Mind, or God.

Knowledge of Truth carries with it the demand to demonstrate it and to be a witness to the healing power of this Truth. Christ Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them."
Matt. 7:20; One of the fruits of the Spirit is modesty. Mrs. Eddy says, "Meekness, moderating human desire, inspires wisdom and procures divine power."
Miscellaneous Writings, p. 360; The only way to demonstrate the divine power is through a recognition that God is all-power and that man has no ability apart from God. This leaves no room for egotism.

One of the Beatitudes Christ Jesus gave us is, "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth."
Matt 5:5; It can readily be seen that the condition of this inheritance is the recognition of the allness of God, good, and therefore the nothingness of any claim to a presence or power other than God. Reaping the inheritance as one is able to do through this Science may rouse envy and jealousy in others, but the sense of modesty that accompanies this demonstration of good protects one from these evils. Man is never a cause; he is the effect of God who is the only cause. If one practices the humility that is inherent in this relationship, this will keep him "under the shadow of the Almighty."
Ps. 91:1;
