Both old and new

From the January 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How often many of us have found comfort, when we needed healing, encouragement, inspiration, by turning to old friends—familiar spiritual truths in the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. We all have seasoned favorites. They've stood the test of time. We've found regeneration by loving them and holding to them.

Christ Jesus drew readily on familiar scriptural treasures. In fact, there were confrontations where his knowledge of specific scriptural passages brought a dramatic solution. But Jesus didn't limit his deepening perception of God to familiar passages. His spiritual insights were constantly leading to fresh analogies, inspired examples. In fact, he reached into depths of reality, discerning man's perfection; and he ultimately stepped fully into the conscious presence of God's allness.

When teaching his followers about God's kingdom, Jesus explained, "Every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old."Matt. 13:52; As we are willing to take on both the demands implied in that statement, we too begin comprehending reality. We begin working to see more clearly God's allness. Things new and old. We bring forth both.
