Overcoming "spiritual poverty"

From the January 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What is the greatest need of the Christian Science movement today? It is the same great need Mrs. Eddy faced, the same great need Christ Jesus had— the need for spiritually-minded men and women to understand and carry the Christ message! If animal magnetism— that unreal, so-called force that pulls one away from good—were an entity, how would it work to defeat the advance of Christian Science? Would it not work to defeat the spiritual impetus that dwells innately within each of us?

Christ Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,"Matt. 5:3; in his first beatitude—the beginning of that teaching called the Sermon on the Mount. Why is "poverty in spirit" a prerequisite for the kingdom of heaven?

Because everyone works to alleviate his own poverty; people pursue and acquire what they consider necessary for their well-being. The Master, Christ Jesus, surely was indicating that the individual who realizes what he needs most is spirituality will pursue the things of Spirit until he has attained them. And who will be prepared to inherit the kingdom of heaven except someone who has the spiritual kingdom as the only goal?
