We organists can do better

From the September 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Right at the beginning of Science and Health we find Mrs. Eddy's words, "The time for thinkers has come."Science and Health, p. vii; Those of us who serve as organists in Churches of Christ, Scientist, would do well to remember this statement when we practice and perform, when we select music, and when we pray about church activity.

One dictionary definition of the verb "to think" is "to exercise the powers of judgment, conception, or inference." Another definition is "to determine, resolve, work out, etc. by reasoning." The basis of our progress as musicians is our understanding of God and His omnipresent law. Spiritual man (our real identity) is inseparable from Soul, the fount of all harmony and beauty. If we feel frozen in an uninspired routine, if we feel we're going about our tasks like a windup toy, we need to listen more attentively to divine Mind. Because inspiration never stops flowing from Mind, we can carry out our church activities with buoyancy and zest. Mrs. Eddy writes: "A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man. It extends the atmosphere of thought, giving mortals access to broader and higher realms. It raises the thinker into his native air of insight and perspicacity."ibid.,p. 128;
