Going to church—prayer for the world

From the August 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Can you remember where you were last week at the time of your community's Sunday and Wednesday Christian Science services? How does your church attendance record compare with that of the people who conduct the services and the Sunday School?

There are many things that seem to conflict with church services these days: Sunday morning soccer games, Wednesday political rallies or town meetings, a primary or secondary means of employment, to name a few. And then there's the question "I study the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly each day, so is it really necessary to hear this same lesson read on Sunday, or to hear readings prepared by the First Reader and testimonies of healing from the congregation on Wednesday evenings?"

The answer is an unequivocal yes! Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, tells us in the second portion of her definition of "Church" in the textbook, Science and Health, "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick." Science and Health, p. 583.
