The realness of what we declare

From the May 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The reality of spiritual being behind Christian Science treatment keeps it from depending on the abilities of the person praying. And the more we become conscious of this divine reality, or Science of being, the less we suppose we have to accomplish something "personal" in declaring words of truth. Spiritual consciousness includes such a concrete sense of God's intelligence, perfection, and omniaction that man's nature as reflection is apparent. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science, writes, "Man shines by borrowed light." Retrospection and Introspection, p. 57.

The words we use are reminders of Truth, of the spiritual light and reality of being that dawn on us as we pray. As we continue working and inspiration expands, we realize that the truths we've been holding to are indications of God's actual universe at hand. They are no longer words in thought or our own human assertion, but they are seen to be the potent, active expression of divine Mind itself. At such times we know the accuracy of Isaiah's words "Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily." Isa. 58:8.

Treatment through spiritual argument or affirmation does not cause truth to become real. It aids us in excluding the error of belief that obscures the real. The truths we declare are substantial, active, entirely real, long before we state them. Understanding that the truth we're stating and holding to is utterly true gives force and also gives joy to our spiritual affirmation.
