Should it be surprising to think of the Christian Science movement as still new? As someone once said, "A movement moves." Articles on the subject of Church and movement will appear regularly in this section.

Fidelity to God is not fanaticism

From the February 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The life of Christ Jesus offers an undeniable example of fidelity to his God-appointed mission. In unwavering fidelity to his mission of unveiling God's perfect creation for the salvation of mankind, he performed unparalleled healings and overcame death for others and for himself. In him we have the Founder of Christianity and the example of true Christian love that we are to follow.

Nineteen centuries later, history records the fidelity of a woman to her discovery of the Science of Christ, the truth and law that Jesus taught. Faithfully she received from God and gave to the world the Comforter promised by the Master, See John 14:26 . which would reveal to humanity the divine law that comforts, heals, and saves. This fidelity to Jesus' teachings enabled this woman, Mrs. Eddy, to become the Discoverer of Christian Science and the Leader of its movement. Through the Master's teaching and life and through Mrs. Eddy's work and the healings that she accomplished in following Jesus' example, we see that fidelity to what Christ, Truth, reveals to human consciousness is indispensable. Through this obedience we discover God's spiritual creation and His will, which includes health and holiness.

Such fidelity involves more, much more, than willingness to obey God's demands in a merely outward way. It involves a patient working out of the problem of being. It calls for a constant denial of whatever would suggest that life is material, together with perseverance in the knowledge that God is All-in-all, the only Mind there is. This divine Mind is not the creator of sickness, sin, death, or any of the other miseries that confront humanity. Spiritual growth is needed to resist and to overcome these challenges successfully.
