Should it be surprising to think of the Christian Science movement as still new? As someone once said, "A movement moves." Articles on the subject of Church and movement will appear regularly in this section.

Home and "the church in thy house"

From the March 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, mentions home in a way that invites us to prove Christian Science to be a practical and operative Christianity. Encouraging us to lift our concept of home above a merely material sense of a house or apartment, or of those who occupy it, the book explains, "Home is the dearest spot on earth, and it should be the centre, though not the boundary, of the affections."  Science and Health, p. 58.

Many today need to find the dearness of home, and this can be done by gaining a more spiritual sense of home. Actually, all can rise to the dearest possible realization of home, as the consciousness of infinite divine Love.

Willingness to progress in understanding the inseparability of man in God's image from the divine consciousness has brought healing to many families where evil's arguments have threatened to interrupt the natural peace and order of home. Whatever unpleasant situation might claim to disrupt the harmony of home, Christian Science helps us to meet it. This Science shows us how to turn away from matter to Spirit for the evidence of divinely sustained spiritual harmony. The truths found in Christian Science show that the omnipotent action of divine Spirit destroys discords of any type. Speaking to troubled hearts and minds, Mrs. Eddy emphasizes a rule of Christian Science that is applicable to every need for healing in the home. She writes, "The immeasurable Life and Love will occupy your affections, come nearer your hearts and into your homes when you touch but the hem of Truth's garment."  Christian Healing, p. 16. To touch Truth's garment, we must approach Christ, Truth, through understanding the message that Christ Jesus revealed.
