No greater love

From the April 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Greater love hath no man than this, that
a man lay down his life for his friends.

John 15:13

The woman read the words
Then closed the book,
Feeling sad.

It was impossible to express
That kind of love.
She had so many who depended on her.
Children, husband, friends.
She'd gladly
Lay down her life
But for which one?

Yet the words
Returned to her again and again
As she filled her busy days.

She kept seeking the answer
And then it came.
Not her physical life to lay down
But her false sense of life.

All the shoulds, couldn'ts,
Wouldn'ts, buts, ifs,
The list was endless.

But so was her joy
For she saw a million opportunities
To lay down her false sense of life
With all its judging and condemning.
Indeed, no greater love
Hath anyone.
