The educational system of The Mother Church

From the March 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many a mother yearns for her children to have access to quality education—education that will prepare them to develop their full potential for good citizenship and productive, satisfying living. Such an education, of course, should be available and accessible to every child — indeed, to all the world's citizens, whatever their age. That every citizen of the world should find access to the most fundamental education of all—quality spiritual education—is a desire of The Mother Church. And to that end, the activities of the Church of Christ, Scientist—The Mother Church and its branches around the globe—constitute an accessible educational system.

The teachings of this Church are founded on the inspired Word of the Bible, the most widely available book on earth. And they are explained in full in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science and Founder of the Church. The Church constantly strives to make this textbook of God's laws more widely available. Both of these books are open for all to study and understand.

One of the first things people often learn when they read Science and Health is that its teachings have a powerful effect on health and morals; they learn this, quite unexpectedly sometimes, by finding themselves healed and regenerated during the course of their reading. In this way, they find that the teachings of Christ Jesus, which Science and Health elucidates, are as potent today as they were in his day. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Our Master said to every follower: 'Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature! . . . Heal the sick! . . . Love thy neighbor as thyself!' It was this theology of Jesus which healed the sick and the sinning. It is his theology in this book and the spiritual meaning of this theology, which heals the sick and causes the wicked to 'forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts.'" Science and Health, pp. 138-139. An education that promotes health and Christian character in her children is sure to warm the heart of a mother.
