The host welcomed his visitors by saying, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you” (Luke 22:15, New International Version).
Surely, they were glad to have been invited. But there may have been some tension in the air, some discussion as they walked along to supper. After all, Jesus had warned them there would be challenging days ahead (see Luke 21:12, 16, 17).
After the supper the host stepped forward to perform the customary kindness of washing the road dust off the feet of the guests. He poured water into a basin and, one by one, washed the feet of each guest, wiping them dry with a towel (see John 13:4–17).
