Hungry Joe

From the December 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Somebody who has seen Hungry Joe, the bunko swindler, since he went to prison, reports him as holding an apparently sincere belief in his possession of psychologic power. Asked what was the secret of his wonderful success in swindling intelligent and often experienced men, he replied: "It is mesmerism. I have the ability to partially mesmerize almost anybody whose attention I once gain. Did you ever hear of any other bunko man who could operate on the sort of individuals that I have? No, and you won't unless another mesmerist gets into the business."

The first sure symptom of a mind in health, Is rest of heart and pleasure felt at home.
