Testimonies of Healing

Prolonged Illness in Woodstock, Tenn

[Extracts from a series of letters, written between December and July.]

From the August 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Dear Sister in Truth: We have just received your dear letter, and we almost consider it a message from Heaven; for with it came such relief to poor, dear, suffering Hiram, as he has not known for over a year. Nearly two years ago a spot appeared in his throat, which soon developed into cancer, eating away the uvula and soft palate on either side. For eight months he has suffered in silence, the vocal cords being so involved that he could not make a sound. He became paralyzed (I suppose, from impoverished blood) and so had to be fed like an infant. Last fall, when we thought he was suffering all that it was possible for mortal to suffer, inflammation set in. With your letter, relief came. After such weeks of agony, only those who have suffered can know the sweet relief!

Your dear letter this morning brightens and refreshes us, as does the gentle rain the drooping flowers. Such words of comfort and cheer fill our hearts with love and gratitude, first to our Heavenly Father, then to you, His Ambassador (for such I feel you are), sent by Him to us in our great hour of need and affliction. Such a change has taken place in dear Hiram! His rheumatism has all left him, and there has been no return of it through this bitter winter weather. The ulcer on his ankle is much better, and his throat is improving wonderfully. He thanks the dear Lord continually for this Christian Science.
