The Bible is the learned man's masterpiece, the ignorant man's dictionary, the wise man's directory.—Mrs. Eddy, Miscellaneous Writings, p. 364.
Much comment has been called forth of late by some startling utterances of Bishop Williams of Michigan, respecting the Bible, in an address given before five hundred members of the Young Men's Christian Association at one of the leading orthodox churches of the State. As reported by the newspapers he said,—
"The Bible as the Word of God is the most prolific source of unbelief the Church has to contend with. It is that fact that has put Christianity on an unsound basis. ... You must believe the Bible because it is the Word of God, but God is not responsible for many of the things in it. The Bible nowhere declares itself the Word of God."
