Testimonies of Healing

From the April 1908 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I would like to tell of the illumination and joy which has come to me through Christian Science. I was induced to try it as a remedial agent when near the end of earthly existence, as it seemed. I had been told by the best physicians that I had but a short time to live at the most, and that I should shape my plans accordingly. Early in the breaking out of the Civil War I went into the army and served about three years. The last eight months I was in one of those dreadful prison-pens, where I was so inhumanly treated that I contracted numerous diseases which were pronounced incurable. I weighed less than one hundred pounds at the time of my discharge, and was a physical wreck. I was in that condition from 1864 to 1884, never knowing what it was to have a well day.

It was at the stage mentioned that I was induced to try Christian Science as a possible means of relief, although I had no knowledge of its being of any benefit in such cases as mine. I had no confidence in its being of any service to me, but I was so anxious to get relief that I consented to give it a fair trial for at least one week; which I did, with the most gratifying results. I was permanently and radically healed of all my sickness and diseases of every kind. From that time (1884) to the present I have relied wholly on Christian Science for the relief of all the ills which have appeared, and always with the most satisfactory results. It would be impossible to express in language the joy and peace which I have experienced since coming "into the light." I can surely and confidently say that I am indebted to Christian Science for the continuance of the blessing of perfect health through the many years since my healing.

We cannot too often express our gratitude to our beloved Leader for having made it possible for us to enjoy the many blessings which are ours to-day. It is deeds more than words which fully express our gratitude, and I hope to continue to grow in the understanding of the truth which is indeed the "light of the world," and which has been so beautifully exemplified in the life and teachings of our beloved Leader. If this testimony shall be of benefit to any who have heretofore been in doubt as to the permanent benefit of Christian Science, I shall be glad. I can say that after twenty-four years of experience I am still willing to try it the rest of the way to the haven of eternal harmony.—
