Christian Science was first brought to my attention some twenty-eight years ago, through the healing of a very dear sister of mine. After several years of constant treatment by the medical profession, and by the advice of our physician, we had sent her to the high altitudes of the Rocky Mountains, from there to the pine hills of Idaho, and from there to the severe climate of northern Canada; but all to no avail, until the poor girl was so tired and worn out that life seemed a burden to her. It was then, through the kind entreaties of an acquaintance of ours, that we consented to try Christian Science, and to our amazement my sister was entirely healed in five treatments My older sister then adopted Christian Science, and has been a faithful and true adherent, to the manifold blessing thereby of her and hers. She has raised a family of eight children two of them now being mothers, and to my personal knowledge not one of these children ever took a drop of medicine.
Even with all of the above facts staring me in the face, Christian Science had no abiding-place in my consciousness, I having been, as I thought, a devout church-member most of my life. I could see nothing new in Christian Science; although I had seen yet other wonderful healings wrought by this truth. It seemed that my cup had to be full and running over with suffering before I could realize the allness of God. It was in October, 1905. that my sister (the mother spoken of above) paid me a visit, and in a sweet and kindly way pleaded with me to try Christian Science for relief from the untold agonies caused by an accident to my back by being thrown from a buggy. But still I refused to listen to any of her entreaties, until the 24th day of the following January, when I was taken down, with my many other ailments, with a very severe attack of lung trouble. The fear then was so great that it seemed I could not live through the day; and here it was that Christian Science was finally accepted.
My dear wife first called our family physician; the reply came that he was out of the city. She telephoned for another physician, but he could not leave his office until six o'clock. She then tried for a third, who was in the city, but could not be located at the time. Some quick action had to be resorted to, and my wife, remembering the many kind and good things my sister had said to us about Christian Science, came to my bedside and said, "Why don't you try Christian Science?" For a few moments the battle was fought; then I said to her, "Do as you think best." The result was that a practitioner was called in and gave me a treatment, and to our great surprise and relief, within forty minutes after the practitioner had reached the room I was entirely free from all pain. At the expiration of six treatments I was completely healed of every ailment, these consisting of my lame back and an acute stomach trouble, the latter manifesting itself so severely at times that I had been laid up for two or three days a week from these attacks.
