Having received many blessings through Christian Science in the last twenty years, I consider it a duty to send my testimony to the Field. Prior to my coming to Christian Science I was a medical nurse, and while acting in that capacity I was the victim of an injury caused by over-lifting, from which I suffered for more than a year and a half. I also had a serious eye disease, from which I was nearly blind.
When kind friends first advised me to try Christian Science, I was prejudiced and narrow in my religious belief, and did not think it possible to be healed by the prayers of a Christian Scientist without the use of material remedies. But finally, when death seemed to be drawing near, I was led to seek the help of Christian Science. In eight treatments the effect of the injury was gone. I had not mentioned the last-named trouble to the practitioner, but its healing was nevertheless just as speedy and wonderful as the other. So great was my sense of relief that it seemed as if I could not refrain from singing and praising God continuously. During all these years Christian Science has been my guide and helper to a better understanding of the healing truth which was taught and demonstrated by the Master. I found that I had lost nothing in giving up my former beliefs, for I retained all that was good in them and gained infinitely more in the religion of Christian Science. My cup is full and running over with love and gratitude to God, the giver of all good, and to Mrs. Eddy, our dear, patient Leader, who is treading the path before us and ever laboring to make the Christ-teaching clear to our understanding.
I have had many proofs of the healing power of. Christian Science, and in this connection I will mention one more. Leaving a lighted hall, where my husband and I had been attending an entertainment one evening, I missed my footing and fell down a flight of steps. I was assisted home by my husband and others, and the next morning I discovered that I was seriously injured, my body being helpless below the waist and without feeling. I lay in this paralytic condition for six days, without any outward change, but Truth was silently doing its work. On the sixth day came the awakening. I called for the Bible and Science and Health, and as our dear Leader advises, I tried to "study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit" (Science and Health, p. 495). As I began to realize more fully than ever before the import of this admonition, I found I could turn on my side. My husband, a nonbeliever in Science, was greatly alarmed when he saw me do this, saying, "Be careful how you turn back." I replied that the same power which had given me strength to move would be available when I wanted to move again. After two hours' rest in this position, I turned back with ease and had a peaceful sleep. On the seventh day, after tilling my consciousness with Truth and Love, I was able to sit up in bed without assistance, and to put on a dressing-gown. I then left the bed, standing erect on my feet. At first there seemed to be no feeling in my limbs, but presently it came. I then walked a few steps, meeting my husband and the nurse, who advised me to lie on the couch and rest before making further effort. I yielded to their wishes, but all the while would not permit them to aid me in the least, as they so much desired. The next day I walked out upon the lawn, and on the tenth day rode nine miles to take the nurse home. In thirteen days from the time of the injury I was doing my usual work, and have never had a return of the trouble since.
