Many proofs have been given me, during the past ten years, of the healing, enlightening, and protecting power of Christian Science. After having been annoyed for many years with throat trouble, I was told by the last physician consulted that it would result in a serious lung affection. As relatives had suffered with this disease, this statement from the physician caused a great fear on the part of my mother that the disease would develop in my system, and eleven years ago it began to make itself more manifest. This, together with an awakening to the awfulness of the world's bondage to evil, which I seemed to see manifested so plainly, a feeling of utter helplessness to do anything of myself to make higher and purer the desires of mankind, and the seemingly slight impression which others who desired to do good had made on the general thought, cast over me a great sense of depression. The belief in error's reality seemed to take away my trust in God. I had always prayed and continued to pray, but had not the least realization that God existed or that my prayers would be answered. I prayed simply because I was afraid not to do so. It seemed to me that there was not a ray of light anywhere: all I could see when I looked about me was a sense of evil in some form. I practically trusted no one and loved no one.
During the year 1898 my mother began the study of Christian Science, and in September of that year I began to take Christian Science treatment; not because I believed that it would help me, nor even with the least desire to live, but simply to please my mother; nevertheless, in three months the disease was completely overcome, and I have remained healed. I was wearing glasses at the time I commenced the treatment, but they were doing me no good, and after talking with the practitioner about Christian Science, I at once laid them aside, and have never had them on since. My thought began to brighten at once, and the whole world looked different to me. I have found during these years that every cloud has not only a silver lining, but a golden; in fact, as we look out through the Christ-mind, error disappears, and we see only the light, far brighter than sunlight. We find that in God's light there is no darkness at all.
I am grateful for Christian Science, and I know that it does heal. I am grateful that the one God has revealed Himself and given us absolute proof that He is; that He is with us, and that He does answer prayer. Christian Science is His revelation to men, and Jesus' demonstrations of the power of God's word to heal, opened the way whereby we might learn the divine Principle of all true healing. Mrs. Eddy's thought, being so pure and unselfish, responded to the power of Truth, and the understanding of the Principle of Jesus' demonstrations came to her as a result.
