It was early in 1902 that I first heard of Christian Science. I was struggling against the greatest difficulties in trying to educate and provide for my family, two of whom were small boys. There seemed to be no visible way for me to extricate myself from the darkness enveloping me and mine. At this period I opened my home to strangers, and some of these, I afterward learned, were Christian Scientists. One day, when I was particularly perturbed, I was told to read a little book which I would find in a lady's room. I took time to go there, for I was curious to know what a book could contain that would solve my problems, and I found "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which I have loved from that hour. I opened it at page 494, reading these words first: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." That was what I was seeking, some power to meet my every need, to lift me out of materiality into the spiritual sense of Truth, and divine Love has never since failed me!
By realizing the true significance of this phrase, I have been enabled to help my son when he was suffering from appendicitis, a badly injured ankle, and a serious throat trouble. My first test came about two months after I had heard of Christian Science and seen its benefits manifested, when this same son ran a rusty nail into his foot, from which he was suffering intensely. I knew what materia medica would name the disease, and I knew of many failures of physicians to save such cases, so I trusted in God and in "the power of his might," and sent for a Christian Science practitioner, through whom, under divine Love, my boy was completely healed in a few hours. Since then I have never myself sent for a physician.
I was off guard in May, 1910, and was suddenly stricken unconscious. In this state my children became alarmed and called in medical aid. On becoming conscious, I objected, but was assured I need not take medicine, but that I must rest, as I had worked too hard. I tried to be obedient. My practitioner told me to hold to "Thy will be done," and it has guided me to perfect health. Under divine guidance the asserted law of chronic heart trouble has been completely broken by the scientific law of being, as given to us by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. I have overcome the tendency to severe headaches and acute attacks of rheumatism.
