I feel it is time to add my own testimony to those that have been given, and which have been such a help and encouragement to me. In 1897 I was advised to give Christian Science a trial for nervousness in the very worst form.
I had been living on a very light diet for two years, on account of a severe stomach disorder. In ' the spring of 1895 I went to West Baden (Ind.) Sulphur Springs, but got no benefit. In August of the same year I went to Colorado Soda Springs, and stayed thirty days, returning without any relief. In four years' time I had fourteen different doctors, some of them giving up my case as hopeless, others telling me that it would take a long time to get any relief from such a case as mine. I had not been able even to carry a bucket of coal up one flight of stairs for the two years before coming into Science. But deliverance was at hand, for finally I got the address of a Christian Science practitioner, called on him, and began to take treatment. I was healed instantaneously of the nervous and stomach troubles. From that time on I could eat anything that anybody else did.
My eyes had been troubling me, and I wore glasses fitted by one of the best opticians in Chicago. I had the lenses changed four times the first year, and I had to wear the glasses when I was in bed, if there was any light whatever in the room ; even then I could not read five minutes without such discomfort from headache that I was forced to quit reading entirely. The optician who had examined my eyes, told me that they had always been imperfect and that I would always have to wear glasses. From early boyhood I had to shut one eye when looking at anything afar off. At the second Christian Science treatment, I asked my practitioner in regard to the glasses, and he said I did not need them. I took off the glasses, went home, and read from Science and Health all day and until ten o'clock in the evening without experiencing the slightest trouble with my eyes.
