Testimonies of Healing

In deepest love and gratitude I...

From the March 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In deepest love and gratitude I should like to add my testimony of the many wonderful proofs of the efficacy of divine Love that I have had in Christian Science. Soon after I had learned of this truth, I was seized with acute pain that took me quickly into "the valley of the shadow of death." There were no Scientists near, so I asked my friend with whom I was staying to read Science and Health to me, knowing the truth would heal me, even though I was too ill to follow the words. I was violently sick, but after half an hour I was healed. I asked my friend why she did as I requested without argument, and her simple reply was, "I knew you must have immediate help, and I thought you knew best."

I was healed of typhoid fever in three days, although so sick I could not take any solid food. I was out the third day, though the heavy night sweats from the fever lasted several nights longer. I have also been healed of a form of lockjaw. I started abroad with a pain in my jaw, and by the time I reached Paris I could only insert my thumb between my teeth. However, as I was being treated in Science I continued my journey. By the time I reached Italy, I could only insert my smallest finger between my teeth, but I had no pain. Then I was frightened. I felt so far away and was tired out with being able to eat so little ; but I knew divine Love is always present, and I set to work to master and overcome the fear. The next day I was better, and the following day I could open my mouth again.

On one occasion I fell down-stairs and was unable to stand upright. The pain in my hip and limb was intense, and for five days I was unable to move. In the night, when asleep, I sometimes got my position shifted and would awake crying out from the pain, but the truth expressed in the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) always helped me back into position. I was also hurt in some way internally, as there was no normal action of the bowels ; but on the sixth day I took a few steps, by leaning on a chair. The next day I got down-stairs, and in nine days from the time of the accident I entered First Church, London, with only a slight limp, having traveled up from the country.
