Acknowledgment of the many blessings I have received through the understanding of Christian Science has always brought me a sense of that divine strength of which Mrs. Eddy speaks, when she says (Science and Health, p. 79), "Mind-science teaches that mortals need 'not be weary in well doing.'"
Nine and a half years ago I was stricken with paralysis of the entire body, leaving it in an utterly helpless and painful condition. My sister urged us to try Christian Science, and we did so, but at the end of a week my condition had not changed, and the family, becoming alarmed, demanded that I should have medical treatment. One of the best physicians of the city was summoned, but after two weeks of most careful medical attention my condition had grown so much worse that another physician was called in for consultation. After a thorough examination my case was pronounced hopeless. The consulting physician later expressed his desire to perform an experimental operation at the base of the brain with a possible chance of effecting a cure, but my people rebelled at this and decided as a last resort to turn again to Christian Science.
Previous to this seeming crisis the doctors had administered hypodermics to produce sleep, but they had no effect whatever; my attendants were also cautioned to give me no solid food, for I was said to be paralyzed internally and could not digest it. During the first treatment in Christian Science I fell asleep and awoke feeling very much refreshed. I asked for something to eat and was given solid food, and I continued to eat three meals a day with no ill effects. Renewed strength came to me each succeeding day, and in about six weeks I was out of bed and walking around the house. In the following January, finding myself happier, healthier, and stronger than ever before, I took a position which necessitated considerable standing and walking, but suffered no inconvenience. During treatment for the above-mentioned disease I was healed of the habit of smoking, also of the use of profane language.
