PROGRESS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the March 1918 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WITH the passing of April, 1917, a quarter century mark is established in the spread of the truths of Christian Science in the twin cities of Auburn and Lewiston, Maine, for it was on April 13, 1892, that the church work was organized here. Preliminary sowing of seed had been in progress two years, and services on Sunday were continued regularly after August, 1890, the initial one in rooms in Bank Block, Lewiston, then in a private home in Auburn, and later in various halls in that city, changes being made from time to time as larger accommodations were needed.

At the time of organization thirteen students gave their names and loving effort to the establishment of Christian Science services here. This number was augmented by five new members added during the same month and by six more in the next December. Since then the growth has been steady, although the church has seen many of its most active workers depart from this to other fields. In spite of these changes, however, divine Love has blessed the work of the church abundantly and has raised up new followers who have loyally shouldered its responsibilities, shared its privileges, and spread its blessings.

The Sunday school work was started in the early days of the movement here and has enjoyed a remarkable growth. The young people are responding wonderfully to the truths taught, are applying these truths in their daily life, and are so generous in their financial support that the Sunday school is able to take care of its own needs and also to aid liberally in the regular church work.
