CHARITY

From the November 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

America has just passed through a great war, one of the greatest trials that can come upon a nation. So far the outcome of its participation in this conflict has not brought the blessings of peace that were ardently hoped for and expected. Many are hopefully asking themselves the all-important question, Is this the beginning of the final extinction of evil?

We read with very great interest what is said by our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, on page 96 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and note with hope and faith her assurance that "this material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace. The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears. These disturbances will continue until the end of error, when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth. Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding. Belief is changeable, but spiritual understanding is changeless."

Christian Scientists more than any others are comforted by the hope and faith that this "moral chemicalization" has actually begun and that sometime—let us hope and trust at no far distant day—"all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth," in part at least as the result of the sorrows and sufferings of the war. As believers in the triumph of good over evil and the eternal reign of peace, we should be lovingly charitable and helpful to those who are in despair for lack of this understanding.
