Testimonies of Healing

For a large portion of my younger...

From the November 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For a large portion of my younger days I was a great sufferer from nervousness which took a very acute form and caused me much misery. I was in constant fear of people and things, and naturally my physical health was anything but good. Unless one has experienced this condition it would be difficult to grasp how grateful one feels to find that the study of Christian Science has freed one from this trouble. I was also a sufferer from indigestion which I had had from quite a child, and the several kinds of medicines which I had to take brought no permanent relief. These, however, were all dispensed with after reading the first chapter on "Prayer" in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and I experienced relief the first day I began this study, and gradually I gained more and more understanding of man and his relationship to God. As a result, for the past seventeen years I have almost forgotten I was ever tormented or troubled in this way and, whereas before I was always ailing, now I am always well. The following is one of a number of instances wherein Christian Science has been a never failing help. Some years ago while on a holiday I sprained my ankle very badly and a few hours afterwards it was so swollen and the pain so intense that the slightest touch of anything such as the hem of my skirt was almost more than could be endured. It therefore seemed that the only thing to do was to lie down and keep my foot up from the ground. As soon as it became apparent that the injury to my ankle was more than a mere sprain my husband and I set to work in the way our textbook teaches, but apparently with little result, for when late in the evening we endeavored to retire for the night, I was unable to bear even the weight of the sheet on my foot. At this point a very clear realization came to us both that either the whole condition was known to God and part of His consciousness, or else it was unknown to God and therefore unreal; either one of these two propositions was correct. At this point it was only a matter of a minute or two when I got up and though the pain was at first extremely severe and I was only able to limp with great difficulty about the floor, in twenty minutes or so I was walking quite normally. The next morning we took a ten-mile walk without the least discomfort, although the discoloration and swelling did not disappear till two or three days later.

Christian Science has not only healed me of sickness, but it has given me a God that I can depend upon, a God that is Love; indeed I find He is man's greatest friend.—
