It is with gratitude for what Christian Science has done and is doing for me that I send this testimony. Six years have passed since I took any medicine, whereas before I used it continually. I suffered for five months from cancer of the stomach. My father had been operated on three years previously for the same disease, and passed on ten days afterwards. After I had gone to two specialists, one took an X-ray photograph, which showed a growth about as large as a medium-sized orange. I consented to an operation on the following Saturday, because I suffered so much, and had been on a liquid diet for two months.
My husband then learned of Christian Science at his work, through a lady who had heard that a friend of hers had been healed through Christian Science of tuberculosis, and who thought it would do no harm for us to investigate. She told him of the church; so that night we went to the Wednesday evening testimony meeting. I could hardly sit still on account of pain. After the meeting we went to a Reading Room, in connection with the church. Not knowing what to ask for, I waited until the others had gone. The librarian then inquired what we wanted, and I told her I was facing an operation on the following Saturday if I did not find something to cure me right away. She said, "You want 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mary Baker Eddy." I took the book home with me and read, first in one place and then in another, to see what it contained. I could see quickly that I had been trusting in medicine instead of God. I said to my husband, "We will give God a fair trial." I threw out the four kinds of medicine I was taking every half hour. The next morning my husband said: "You are looking better. I can tell by your looks you aren't suffering so much." I continued to read, and in three weeks went back to work in a tailor's shop, healed.
I am thankful to God for the Christian Science literature and for the testimonies, which are so helpful to me. From the study of Christian Science we learn that Jesus came to show us how to live; and I am so glad Mrs. Eddy was willing to bear the cross of the world's ridicule, as Jesus did, to give us this truth in Science and Health, and that the book is placed in the free circulating library at our Reading Rooms all over the world, where any who hunger can have free use of it as well as of the Bible.—St. Charles, Ill.
