"He that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." Thus spoke the Saviour; and the truth of these words has been proved in my case. Long did I search in the Scriptures in order to ascertain the meaning of the words, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."
Finally the question arose in my mind, Where are the works? Although I had belonged to a strictly orthodox church from early youth, had been superintendent of the Sunday school for forty years, and at times had occupied the pulpit, the meaning of these words remained hidden from me. I often earnestly prayed that I might know the truth which frees us from all evil. I encountered storms and tribulations, suffered loss through fire, and was sick. Furthermore, I had a malignant growth on my mouth which caused me much trouble. I called upon God for help, but the condition apparently grew worse. I consulted three doctors, and they advised an operation as soon as possible. However, I would not consent to this.
Then it was that the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, came into our home. My wife, who was suffering greatly from weak nerves, read this book and other Christian Science literature which some friends had given her, and I noticed that she improved. I myself, however, was very much opposed to this teaching, because I did not understand it; but finally I called upon a practitioner and asked her for advice. After a short explanation I was convinced that this was exactly what I had been searching for so long. I therefore asked this practitioner for treatment, which was lovingly and patiently given.
