When Christian Science came to me, I had been a sufferer for five years from gastric or duodenal ulcer, obstructed pyloris, and deformed lower intestine. For the greater part of this period I also suffered from hemorrhoids.
I became ill while on active service in France with the regular forces of the British army in July, 1917. Treatment was given me in military hospitals for about seven months, after which period I received my discharge from the army as "no longer physically fit for war service." After my discharge I was treated by several well-known medical men in the south of England, and at three hospitals; but materia medica failed to cure me or give me any permanent relief or complete freedom from pain. On several occasions I was examined by X-rays and advised to have a surgical operation; but I refused. During the period of my invalidism I was constantly taking medicines and oil, and I was dieted with soft foods and milk. Christian Science, therefore, came to me when my burdens seemed very heavy.
The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was given to me by a beloved Christian Scientist. The reading of this book so interested me and convinced me of the efficacy of Christian Science that I quickly applied to a practitioner for treatment, which was unhesitatingly and lovingly given. My healing was not instantaneous, as it covered a period of about six weeks; but the spiritual uplift I received during this time was wonderful. I am now perfectly healthy and strong, thanks to Christian Science. I have also been healed of the habit of smoking a daily average of twenty cigarettes; and although a house shortage seemingly exists, I have been supplied with suitable accommodations and the necessary furnishings.
