I have received so many blessings through Christian Science, more than I can ever speak of, and am so full of gratitude to God, that I send the following experience.
In the year 1901, I started my training as a nurse in a large general hospital, the doctors giving an unwilling consent to the experiment, as I had had several epileptic fits in 1893 and 1895 and also in my childhood. Although for some years I had been quite free, I never lost the great fear of these attacks returning, though in a vague sort of way I reasoned that if I were doing the highest work a woman could do, God would keep them away. Still I was often discouraged by feeling the warning; and when nearly two years of the training were over, an attack came again, followed by my dismissal from the hospital. I felt utterly stranded, and the only prayer I could express was, "O God, if there be a God, send me some proof!" Soon I succeeded in getting a post as staff nurse in a children's home, and while there heard of Christian Science.
My greatest cause for thankfulness came first; for I heard of God as ever present Love, felt the uplifting which follows the understanding of man as spiritual, made in the image of God, realized my unity with the Father, and knew that I was His child. I eagerly drank in the truth in this respect, but for many months remained skeptical of the physical healing, until little by little I tested it for myself. I was able to lay aside my glasses, and my general health improved; though my bottle of bromide still remained at the bedside. Then it gradually dawned on me that I was trying to serve two masters; and I decided to give up materia medica. So I threw away my drugs and left the home.
