ON RIGHT BEGINNINGS

From the December 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A right beginning in the study of any subject is very important. Many a time it has been the experience of students that a wrong beginning, a start made along wrong lines, has necessitated retracing their steps and starting anew. In all well-defined subjects, that is, subjects which have received the thoughtful study of men, definite lines for progress have usually been laid down; and it is always well to follow these lines if one would gain a knowledge of the subjects without having to traverse the devious ways whereby the knowledge has been attained and systematized by others.

The study of Christian Science is no exception to the general rule. And in this connection nothing is more common than to meet with such a question from the beginner as, How shall I start aright in order that I may make rapid and sure progress in my studies? The question is a very natural one. It shows that the student is aware of the greatness of the task he has set himself, and also that he is desirous of avoiding the pitfalls into which the unwary are apt to fall.

It is well that the beginner in the study of Christian Science should be circumspect. For it unfortunately is the case that too many have been sidetracked by spurious systems calling themselves Christian Science, and thereby have had their progress seriously retarded. Christian Science calls upon men to take heed unto their every thought. It makes known to them the incontrovertible truths of Being, including those truths pertaining to man himself, and insists upon their whole thinking conforming to these truths if they would gain the victory over the fallacies of material sense, including the false beliefs about a material body and the ills to which it is subject. Therefore it is wise for every beginner to seek to begin aright in this most important of studies.
