To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." This marvelous statement, as given on the first page of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, has proved to be a real beacon light to me. Being a trained nurse, steeped in medical theories, I scorned the idea of Christian Science when it was first presented to me.
Although Christian Science has been my only physician for the past nine years, until about two years ago I seemed to rely upon it in cases of illness only. Then a great sorrow came into my life, the passing on of a loved one, and it seemed to me that all light had gone out and I was in total darkness. Grief, bitterness, a sense of loss, listlessness, melancholia, and a desire to shut myself in from every one, brought me to the very depths of despair. This all served to bring on an old malady of which I had been healed before, acute cystitis. When it seemed as if the dark waters were rapidly closing in round about me, we decided to call a Christian Science practitioner. After the love expressed and the patience shown throughout those dark hours, it is little wonder I finally awakened to the realization of the meaning of that glorious statement by Mrs. Eddy quoted above. Since I have learned what it means to lean "on the sustaining infinite," I am a changed woman, and have found life to be glorious because Life is God. Aside from this healing of sorrow I have had many physical healings.
During an epidemic we were at a hotel in a strange city and I was very ill. Fear was manifested on all sides. Help was called for and lovingly given by a practitioner of that city, and in three days I was able to take the train with my husband. This healing was beautiful, for it proved conclusively that we were not depending upon personality, as the practitioner was a stranger to us.
