"God is . . . a very present help in trouble." This text from the forty-sixth psalm has been proved to me conclusively in the last three years. Until I was fifteen I had suffered with a disease of the ears which had eaten away the drum of one ear. Many doctors had been tried, and I was an out-patient of a hospital for a number of years; but no cure could be found.
The climax was reached in 1923. when in my fifteenth year I was told that I might expect total deafness at any time. Preparations were made to send me to a deaf institution to finish my education; but God came to my aid. A friend who had received a healing through demonstrating the power of God, advised my parents to try Christian Science. As material aid had failed us, we turned to Christian Science in our time of need; and in three weeks after visiting the practitioner who so lovingly treated me, I was healed. During the week-end I visited my former doctor, and when he examined my ears he was amazed. In his report he said that the drum of the ear had a new covering of pink skin, the discharge had stopped, and my hearing was restored. This was the beginning of a new era in my life.
During the next six months I proved God to be my intelligence in my school work. At the term examination, instead of being near the bottom, as I generally had been, I went up to second place in a class of seventy pupils. At the end of the year I obtained my proficiency certificate; and although I was two years overage, the inspector granted me a free place in the high school, because of my progress in those last six months.
