For about fifteen years I had suffered from asthma, which had gradually incapacitated me for work of any kind, and many times made me fearful for my life. The outlook for the future seemed very dark. I was without relatives to help me, and had very little money. At that time I was a registered medical nurse, so that sickness and disease were very real to me; and physicians in various parts of the country told me I would never be well.
In the winter of 1915, when in the South seeking help from the climate there, I became acquainted with a Christian Scientist. Upon being questioned as to why I was there, I replied, "I cannot stand the northern winters." She told me if I would turn to Christian Science I could stay in any climate. It was several months after this that I asked for treatment. My thought then was that I would be healed and would return to medical nursing. When I began really to study this Science, however, and the truth began slowly to unfold in my consciousness, the truth about God and His creation, and the unreality of all sickness, disease, and sin, I had no desire but to continue the study. My healing was slow; but with persistent striving to follow the rules laid down in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and with the help of practitioners, it was accomplished. I now rejoice in a greater sense of health, harmony, peace, and freedom than I ever knew before.
Eyeglasses were discarded soon after I began the study of Christian Science; great fear was overcome; a sense of financial limitation left me, and, in a degree, self-consciousness. But more than all else I am grateful for the spiritual uplift that has come to me. My gratitude to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and to all who have so patiently helped me, is unbounded.—Portland, Maine.
