Through the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I have learned to understand and appreciate the Bible more than ever before. After six years' earnest study of the Christian Science textbooks and the authorized literature, the statements of Truth written in the Bible have been spiritually discerned, and therefore scientifically understood, because many physical healings have been made manifest, and erroneous conditions overcome.
An experience which I had some time ago has made me still more grateful for the understanding of the ever-presence of God, as taught in Christian Science. It is necessary for me to take a train each day to the city in which I am employed. To reach the station I have to go down a very steep hill, at the bottom of which are a number of railroad tracks. On one particular morning, a friend was taking my sisters and me to the station in an automobile. We were going down the icy hill when the driver found he could not put on the brakes. On the first track a train was backing up, and on the fourth track a fast train was approaching. Seeing what was before us, the driver turned the car in an effort to run alongside of the tracks. In doing so the car turned around twice, at the same time skidding down the hill. I silently declared the truth that God, good, was our protection and that there were no accidents in the realm of Mind. The car stopped suddenly on the opposite side of the street, about ten feet away from the first train. Those who saw us thought that nothing could save us, even though a brakeman jumped on the train on the first track in an effort to stop it. The other occupants of the car, not Christian Scientists, could not understand it. But I rejoiced all the day, for it had been proved to me that God is available in all places at all times; and I was grateful for Christian Science, because it had taught me the truth.
I have had many experiences in which Christian Science was applied, and at all times good was the outcome. My first healings were of stomach trouble and discouragement. When Christian Science was presented to me, I was entering my senior year in high school. My school work had always been hard for me; and even with much time devoted to study, my grades were not satisfactory. However, I was able to do my last year's school work with a greater sense of freedom, receiving better grades, and was even able to hold a position several hours after school. In my work, too, I have made steady progress. Eight months after starting to work, I was earning almost twice the salary I first received.
