A SURE FOUNDATION

From the June 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE Church of Christ, Scientist, is founded on a basis which cannot be shaken, because Christian Science is absolute and incontrovertible. This church is established on the Rock, Christ. It acknowledges and demonstrates the same divine Principle, God, as did Christ Jesus; and this is substantiated by the fact that its followers, Christian Scientists, make use of their understanding of Principle to heal both sickness and sin after the manner of the Nazarene.

"Jesus established his church and maintained his mission on a spiritual foundation of Christ-healing," writes Mrs. Eddy on page 136 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." "He taught his followers that his religion had a divine Principle, which would cast out error and heal both the sick and the sinning." Christian Science is the religion of Christ Jesus, since it has the same divine Principle as he had and heals in the same way as he healed. It has restored primitive Christianity to men, with all its vigor of faith and spiritual power, restating its truths in scientific terms readily understandable by every honest seeker for Truth, and thereby offering the same demonstrable religion which over nineteen centuries ago began to change the religious thought of the world.

Now, what is the nature of the divine Principle which Jesus understood so well, and which Christian Science elucidates so clearly? Principle is not a mere abstraction; Principle is God. Principle is infinite Mind or Spirit, the only cause or creator. Principle is infinite Life, infinite Love, infinite good. Principle is the Being who includes within Himself all reality, and apart from whom nothing real exists. Divine Principle is the God whom Christ Jesus understood, adored, and demonstrated, and whom Christian Scientists likewise understand, adore, and strive to demonstrate. Perceiving Truth as the Master perceived it, Paul could write to the Corinthians, as Christian Scientists can say to-day, "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ."
